The Coalition's annual Policy Agenda provides a "big picture" road map for policymakers and advocates. While the Coalition generally focuses on one or two of the issues in the Policy Agenda in any given year, the Agenda offers a useful context in which to consider specific issues.
The Kids Are Priority One Coalition's policy agenda is determined each year through an open and inclusive process that involves input from many coalition members:
Step #1 (Mid-September): Kids Are Priority One staff convenes Work Groups on various issue areas to draft the coalition's tentative policy agenda for the upcoming year.
Step #2 (October-November): The Work Groups identify key issues on which to focus and flesh out the coalition's position on those issues.
Step #3 (late November): Kids Are Priority One staff convenes an open, statewide meeting to discuss and finalize the policy agenda, based on the Work Groups' recommendations.
Step #4 (December): Kids Are Priority One staff works with Work Group members to prepare fact sheets for various issue areas.
Step #5 (January): Kids Are Priority One staff distributes the policy agenda to all legislators.
Step #6 (January-August): Coalition members and coalition staff work to build support for the policy agenda among legislators and other decision makers.
